Internet company launches broadband telephony to the public

(2004.03.02)

Kabelnettet.dk is the first Danish company to launch internet broadband telephony to the public

Kabelnettet.dk is the first Danish company to launch internet broadband telephony to the public. The service started yesterday 1 March. Broadband telephony enables customers to use their data lines for telephone calls via PCs as well as making conventional phone calls. Kim Nielsen, managing director of Kabelnettet.dk, says customers need to buy a gateway-box and either transfer their old fixed net telephone number or buy a new one. Analogue telephones can then be connected to the gateway box thus making it possible to make and receive phone calls.

The total price for the box and transfer of an old telephone number to the new system amounts to DKK 1,200 (USD 204). Prices for telephone calls via broadband connections will be lower than conventional fixed net telephony and there is no monthly subscription to pay. The news is reported by ComputerWorld online.
